NMAT or NMIMS is a computer-generated exam conducted every year around the months of November-January. The National level of the entrance exam is conducted by the GMAC (The Graduate Management Admission Council) which is a non-profit organization of business schools. The former full form of NMAT was the NMIMS Management Aptitude Test or the NarseeMonjee Institute of Management Studies Management Aptitude Test. NMIMS started in 1981 by the Shri vile Parle Kelavani Mandal (SVKM) with a view to reaching the demand of management institutes in the country. Earlier the scores for the NMAT exam were only accepted by the NarseeMonjee Institute of Management Studies. After the GMAC acquired the EXAM, NMAT was renamed as NMAT by GMAC and has been accepted by more than 30 institutes since then.
The exam is held in 52 cities in India and 4 places abroad. The NMAT exam is way different than other management entrance exams with respect to its conduct, procedure, and selection. The exam facilitates the candidates to attempt 3 times unlike other management examinations so that candidates have the opportunity to improve their scores. The exam is held within a period of 2-3 months during which the candidates can give three attempts. Further, the candidates have the option to choose exam dates according to their convenience within this period.
With the outbreak of the COVID 19, various changes have been made in the whole procedure of the exam. The period of the exam has been increased from 75 to 88 days and will be held from 4th November 2020 to 30th January 2021. Moreover, there is no negative marking for wrong answers. There is also a provision for rescheduling the exam date in case any candidate is not able to give the exam on the original date. In that case, the candidate has to reschedule the convenient date within 72 hours from the date of the originally scheduled exam. The candidate has to pay a fee of Rs 1100 exclusive of taxes via credit card in order to reschedule the exam date.
