Even a tiny loophole can damage the ultimate hope of winning the
game. Preparing for an All Nation entrance exam is not an easy task and
requires guts and utmost dedication. With dedication comes a certain
trap that must be avoided while preparing for the exam.
Here are some common traps that one must avoid while preparing for
CAT:-
Not going through the syllabus
The first requisite while preparing for CAT is to study the syllabus
thoroughly and noting down the important topics for each section.
Many candidates have the tendency to assume that there is no need to
study the syllabus minutely as a result of which they get panicked
during the exam.
Not having a proper routine
Hard work is important to achieve a goal but only doing hard work
without any proper planning might lead to nothing. Setting up a routine
and making it a habit of following it rigorously is important. Also, it must
not be the case that a routine is framed but it is not executed.
No time management
If a candidate is not able to manage his time properly during the
preparation and the exam, it will be very difficult to cover all the
sections. For this, again framing a routine is important so that it
becomes easier to divide the time for each section.
No conceptual understanding
Memorization of formulas and equations without having a concept
based understanding must not be encouraged. It is important to have
the basics cleared for every section, be it Quant or Verbal Ability or Data Interpretation.
Skipping regular revision
One might learn something new today and forget the very next day if
proper revision is not done. If this continues for long, there might be
an accumulation of these unrevised portions at the end. Unless one’s
memory is that great, one must not skip daily revision.
The unequal balance between the weak and the strong
Often candidates commit the mistake of giving more attention to the
strong areas and skipping the weaker sections, i.e., they tend to focus
more on the sections which are comfortable for them while keeping
drifting from the areas they are not comfortable with. This attitude
should not be encouraged and an in-depth understanding of each section
is required to pass the exam.
Not giving enough mocks
Mock tests are important for every candidate in order to sit for the
exam. The more number of mocks one attempts, the more experience
he/she gathers. Mock tests are a replica of the real exam hence
candidates can get an idea about how the conduct of the exam and the
amount of time required in each section.
Not analyzing the mock test results
Only giving mock tests without learning the scope of improvement is
meaningless. Mock tests are given to find out the areas or sections that need more attention. Every test must be properly analyzed so that the
candidate can get an idea of which part he/she needs to improve.
Procrastination
It is human nature to leave unfinished tasks to the last minute.
However, that clearly does not benefit in any way. Similarly, candidates
appearing for CAT must not procrastinate while studying and leave
their incomplete portions to the last minute. They must not be lazy in
practicing and solving mocks as well.
Lack of self-confidence
Not having enough confidence in oneself can give rise to self-doubt,
anxiety, depression can become a hindrance in one’s preparation.
“Confidence is the key to success”- this quote can never go wrong.
Giving up halfway
Something that is started with a view to achieving a goal must not be
stopped halfway. One may give up because of several reasons- failure
in a test, demotivation by another person, not being able to understand
the concepts, etc. However, giving up cannot be the option for any of
these circumstances. In any such situation, self-motivation is very much
needed. One should learn from their failure and strive to work hard.
