How to prepare yourself for Group
Discussion?

Group Discussion is the most important and practical challenge in the selection
process. It does feel like a fish market but the right approach helps to clear the way.
The first and basic and most important point is that before sitting in a GROUP
DISCUSSION, you should have par knowledge and excellence in general
knowledge and par confidence in your communication skills, so that it will be
easy and simpler when the topic is revealed. Firstly the curator or the speaker
asks the name of the person. You have to be patient and calm in your tone with
a strong voice and positive in way of speech.

1. You being proactive are the key to the first lock -
try to be the first one to start the conversation, take initiative, and
make sensible and relevant follow up. Efficient and Effective
communication can help in conveying points of your mind to the
curator and speaker. Snatch the opportunity and be an initiator that
is, speaking up your opinion first. A good impression is left on the
curator but talk about it only if you know anything about it, don’t start
giving irrelevant points.

2. Maintaining firm eye contact with other candidates-
listening is as important as speaking, nevertheless if anyone else is
speaking, you’re listening skills will be judged firmly. Actively listening
to other people’s views you play a vital role by actively listening to
other people’s views which creates a strong impression silently in the curator’s eye.

3. Bonus Points-
If someone in the room is not speaking or is nervous, ask them
gracefully that would they like to give their opinions? There are a few
people in the group discussion who resist talking and speaking,
bringing them into the conversation, and trying to ask them for their
opinions makes a good impression. Good command over the
language and tone helps in bringing calm and declines restlessness
bringing a larger perspective of the topic. Don’t use too many actions
and gestures and NEVER lose YOUR TEMPER.

4. Summing up-
Fewer words, greater impact. Always and most importantly BE IN THE
TIME FRAME. Think before you speak, make sure you don’t say
something bizarre in nervousness. You are heard and judged upon.
Try summing up the topic in less word, your thoughts, and opinions
regarding the topic in the given time limit will do the trick.

5. Do the PESTLE analysis-
Always connect the topic given to you with different aspects and
dynamic nature of the Politics, Environment, Social, Technology, Law                     Economics or Ethics front of our society, where does the topic be
paced and how it is connected. Behave like a manager in a corporate
world, give new topics and points and never get stuck on one point
and repeat it.

6. Study the other person speaking-
Articulate the other person’s nature and way of talking. If someone is
speaking very loudly then speak with a low pitch or vice versa. You
will be ahead of them from your actions. If someone is getting out
of track and giving irrelevant points, graciously ask them to stop.

Group discussion for a company placement-

Group Discussions of campus and company are different from each other
in certain ways. Companies conduct GD to shortlist candidates and
applicants who have a skill of public speaking and can speak properly in
a group, without any hesitation or restlessness.
  •  Unlike, the test of general knowledge and foreign and national affairs in the group discussion round of colleges, company group discussion rounds test your speaking skills and confidence.
  • There are many students who read articles and current affairs one night before GD and prepare themselves but the best is to stay unprepared as this preparation can build mental pressure and cripple anxiety in one.
  • GD’s are usually a mess. No one listens to each other and the HR seems to hardly notice. So what you have to do is put your point in the best possible manner without losing confidence. The focus should be on clarity, loudness, pause, rhythm, and style of conveying.
  • You have to put your point with facts and figures, if you are short of that, take some points from other applicants' speech and work with yours.
  • Speak in a loud but calm tone, a low pitch, and a positive tone. By speaking loudly, you can grab the attention of everyone. Speaking loud helps in clarity and also gives away to proper thoughts and clear traffic from the mind, hence declining the chance of stammering.
  •  Instead of being pretentious that you are listening to other candidates, try to mention their points while you are speaking so that it can be seen that you listened.
  • Stick to your points and don’t get competitive and start proving others wrong. Put your opinions, your ideology first. If you are confused about whether to go for the notion or against it. With a little diplomacy, mix your ideology and put it in front.

If you will use the above tips, you can rock most of your GROUP DISCUSSIONS in a solid way!
