How to Solve Time and Work Problems for CAT Exam?

Before solving the questions directly, you first know what type of questions can be asked in the examination.

Here are a few of the examples:

Q-1. There is a leak at the bottom of the tank. This leak will empty the full tank in 8 hours. A tap is opened from the tank when the tank is full, which intakes water at a rate of 6 Litre per hour, and the tank is now emptied in 12 hours. What is the capacity of the tank?

(a) 288 Litres

(b) 36 Litres

(c) 144 Litres

(d) Cannot be determined

Explanation: Let the tap fill the tank in x hrs.The rate of leak per hour is = (1/8)and rate of the leak when the tap is on = (1 / 12).Thus we get 1/8 – 1/x = 1/12 1/x = 1/8 – 1/12 = 2/48 = 1/24i.e., a tap can fill the tank in 24 hrs.The tap fills at 6 liters per hour so that it will fill 6 × 24 = 144 liters in 24 hours. Hence the capacity of the tank is 144 liters.

Hence option (c) is the answer.

Q-2. One man can do the same work in one day, and a woman can do the same in 2 days. A child can do one-third of the work in a day as compared to a woman. If a company hires men, women, and children in the ratio which makes 39 pairs in the ratio of 6: 5: 2 and pays them the amount of Rs. 1, 113 at the end of the day s work, what should be the daily wages of a child, if the wages are proportional to the value of work done?

(a) Rs 14

(b) Rs 5

(c) Rs 20

(d) Rs 7

Explanation: The ratio of the number of men, women, and children is = 6 : 5: 2, and the total number of men, children, and women = 39.Hence the number of men = 18, children, and women = 15 is = 6.The ratio of work done by men:women: children is = 6 : 3 : 1∴ ratio of work done by 18 men, 6 children, and 15 women is= (18 × 6) : (15 × 3) : (6 × 1) = 108 : 45 : 6Therefore Rs.1113 will be divided in this ratio.This makes Rs756 for men, Rs42 for children, and Rs 315 for women. Hence 6 children will get Rs42 in a day.
Hence the daily wage of a child is equal to 42/6 = Rs7

Therefore, option (d) is the answer.

Now take another example: Suppose a pit has to be dug in 10 days. If an individual can dig a hole in 10 days, then in 1 day, he can 1/10th of the pit. This basic approach is applied while solving most of the time and work questions for CAT.
