why IIM started with the IPM program

IPM stands for the Integrated Programme in Management (IPM). It is a
five-year program in management offered by the Indian Institute of
Management, Indore (IIM Indore). The program is aimed at students
who have passed out of class 12th / Higher Secondary or equivalent from
various schools in India.
The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) conducts its national aptitude
test once every year and over 20,000 students appear annually. The
aptitude test facilitates admission to their 5-year integrated program in
management. The admission process consists of the IPM Aptitude test, on
clearing the cut-off for which students proceed for the next round, Written
Ability Test (WAT) and Personal Interview (PI).

IPM is a unique course structure that provides holistic development
rather than just managerial skills. This is a unique combination that
no other graduate program can match.

The IPM selection process is a rigorous process of selecting students with
diversified portfolios. They choose crème de la crème from the
applications received. This potpourri in itself provides a unique fragrance
that is a priori. Yes, it requires hard work to sustain in the program but in
the end, it is reflected in your personality, once you are ready to face the
world with challenges.

The brand value of IIM has been on growth since its inception. This is
due to its well-carved alumni base. This brand value lends a lot of
credibility as a student in terms of the professional and personal growth
that it provides. Due to this structure of IPM, students are built for
leadership roles and positions of responsibility.

Why IPM?
It was for the first time that a management institute of the repute of an
IIM is offering a course admitting students who completed their higher
secondary examinations. IIM Indore aims to develop competent
management professionals, change agents, and outstanding leaders
through this program. It provides an excellent opportunity for young
aspirants, who want to pursue a career in management. The program
was introduced to help the students getting a head start in the field of
management much earlier than they could have through the more
traditional approach of post-graduation or a master’s program. The
program was also supposed to aid students in overall personality
development and bring about societal awareness in them.

There are several other reasons why this program took place and would
excite a student fresh out of school:

1. Better training in management - thanks to a wider training horizon and a world-class IIM faculty
2. The brand value of being an IIM graduate alongside your graduation
3. Much improved employability as compared to traditional graduation options
4. Relatively easier entrance test as compared to the other management entrance tests post-graduation where the number of applicants is much higher

5 Year Integrated Program for Management – Unique

1. A Multi-Dimensional Perspective – The entire 5-year course is divided into
two parts – three years and two years. The first three years are the
intensive foundation stones/pillars that are laid with utmost precision.
This would include an understanding of humanities subjects as philosophy,
psychology, mathematics, statistics, and economics. The next two years are in
sync with the CAT selected students. The IIM IPM believes in shaping
managers who are socially conscious and relevant in today’s scenario.
The five-year duration is so meticulously designed that it provides high
analytical rigor through mathematics & economics and socially
responsible managers by an understanding of humanities. This opens a
multi-dimensional perspective.

2. Social Internships – As most of the students in India, after class XII, do
not have exposure to working, IPM provides a unique opportunity to
understand the working culture, ethics with the help of a Social Internship
after the end of the first year. To sync, after the end of each year, a student
goes for different internship programs. Students of IPM also have the
opportunity to go on a sabbatical for a maximum of two years. These two
years may be used to acquire experience, earn, or anything else that
would help a student grow.

3. Foreign Exchange Programs – Foreign exchange program is another
feather in the hat. Not many programs, apart from IPM, have such
articulated exchange programs.

4. Campus Placement – Campus placements for IPM students have at par
packages with that of PGDM. So absolutely no differentiation or
discrimination. Moreover, many companies prefer to mold the
candidates according to their requirements, hence companies prefer non-
experienced candidates. Pay packages are just an indicator of the values
imbibed in a student.
