Situated in the financial city of India, The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) is regarded as Asia’s oldest institute for professional social work. The Institute was founded in 1936 by Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and was named Sir Dorabji Tata Graduate School of Social Work. It was officially changed into Tata Institute of Social Science in the year 1944. The institute was declared as a deemed university under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission (UGC) 1956 by the Government of India in 1964. The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) is a multi-campus public research university presently having its permanent residence at Deonar, Mumbai. The earlier campuses were at Nagpada and then Andheri from where it moved to Deonar in the year 1954. In the year 1986, celebrating the Golden Jubilee Year of the Institute a rural campus was established in Tuljapur in the Osmanabad district of Maharashtra with support from the Maharashtra government with a view to promoting sustainable development for rural communities. In the year 2001, the New Campus was formed with the incorporation of the Malti Jal and Jal A.D. Naoroji Campus Annexe into the Deonar campus. In the year 2011, an off-campus was established in Hyderabad upon an invitation from the erstwhile Andhra Pradesh Government. In the same year, another off-campus was established in Guwahati with support from the Assam Government and the Ministry of the Department of North Eastern region. TISS offers good facilities for its students including a Wi-Fi connection in the hostel rooms as well as classrooms, spacious dining hall, best quality food, grand library with 1, 24,000 volumes of books, 1600 audio-visual materials, subscriptions over 10,298 scholarly print, e-journals, study hall that can accommodate about 507students, and other recreational facilities including yoga, gym, table tennis, carom, badminton, aerobics, etc. and health facilities.
